Star Alliance Gold from the UK: which program to build status with
Figures checked October 5, 2026
The UK has no Star Alliance home program. British Airways, the national carrier, belongs to oneworld, and by one 2023 count it held about half of Heathrow's landing and take-off slots. So if your flying is mostly Star Alliance, you have to pick a foreign program to credit it to. We ran four typical frequent flyers through our status calculator to see which one gets them to Gold.
What we found
- Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles is the fastest route to Gold, or the closest to it, in all four examples. Its Elite tier needs 40,000 Status Miles, and Star Alliance flights earn them at the same rate as award miles, with a minimum per flight that helps on short hops.
- Short flights are where programs differ most. A business-class round trip from London to Frankfurt earns 2,400 Status Miles with Turkish, 1,223 with KrisFlyer, 326 PQP with United and 244 SQC with Aeroplan.
- KrisFlyer is the other one to look at for long haul. Eight economy round trips to Newark reach Elite Gold, as they do with Turkish.
- Lufthansa's own Miles & More suits the Lufthansa Group loyalist, not the mixer. It counts fixed points per flight, so Senator takes 25 business round trips to Frankfurt, and Qualifying Points come only from Lufthansa Group and co-issuing partner flights.
- United and Aeroplan are slow from the UK. United's status follows what you spend, and Aeroplan gives 1 Status Qualifying Credit for every 5 points on partner flights.
- British Airways can still win. On short business trips at the fares we assumed, BA's Silver (oneworld Sapphire) comes in 10 round trips, against 17 for Star Alliance Gold with Turkish. On long-haul economy it's the other way round.
The British Airways factor
For most London flyers, BA is the default: the most flights, the most destinations, and a program, The British Airways Club, that rewards what you pay rather than the distance you fly. Choosing Star Alliance means giving up that convenience, so it's worth doing only if your flights are with Lufthansa, SWISS, Turkish, United, Singapore Airlines and the like anyway: because of price, schedule, route or the business you work for.
As a benchmark, here is what BA's Silver (oneworld Sapphire, 7,500 Tier Points) takes on the same routes. The fares are our assumptions, so check them against your own:
| Route and cabin | Tier Pointsper round trip | Round trips to Silver |
|---|---|---|
| London–Frankfurt, Club Europeassumed £450 round trip | 800 | 10 |
| London–Newark, World Travellerassumed £600 round trip | 900 | 9 |
| London–Singapore, World Travellerassumed £900 round trip | 1,200 | 7 |
Silver and Star Alliance Gold are comparable, with lounge access on both. If you can fly BA at similar prices, compare before you commit.
Star Alliance flights from UK airports
London has the widest choice, but you can reach Star Alliance hubs from other airports too. Airlines and the cities they fly to non-stop, from Wikipedia's airport pages (the data our route check uses), with * for seasonal routes. Eurowings and Lufthansa City are left out.
| Airport | Star Alliance airlines and destinations |
|---|---|
| London Heathrow | Lufthansa (Frankfurt, Munich, Salzburg*); SWISS (Geneva, Zurich); Austrian (Vienna); Brussels Airlines (Brussels); Turkish Airlines (Istanbul); TAP (Lisbon); Aegean (Athens); United (Denver, Newark, Washington, Houston, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco); Air Canada (Halifax, Ottawa, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto); Singapore Airlines (Singapore); Thai (Bangkok); EVA Air (Bangkok, Taipei); ANA (Tokyo Haneda); Asiana (Seoul); Air India (Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi); Ethiopian (Addis Ababa); LOT (Warsaw); ITA Airways (Rome); Croatia Airlines (Split*, Zagreb); EgyptAir (Cairo, Luxor*); Avianca (Bogotá); Air China (Beijing, Chengdu); Shenzhen Airlines (Shenzhen) |
| London Gatwick | SWISS (Geneva*, Zurich); Turkish Airlines (Istanbul); TAP (Lisbon, Porto); Aegean (Athens*); Singapore Airlines (Singapore); Air India (Ahmedabad, Amritsar); Ethiopian (Addis Ababa); Croatia Airlines (Split*); Air China (Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu*) |
| Manchester | Lufthansa (Frankfurt, Munich); SWISS (Zurich); Brussels Airlines (Brussels); Turkish Airlines (Istanbul); TAP (Lisbon); Aegean (Athens); Air Canada (Toronto); Singapore Airlines (Singapore); Ethiopian (Addis Ababa, Geneva); EgyptAir (Cairo) |
| Birmingham | Lufthansa (Frankfurt, Munich); SWISS (Zurich); Turkish Airlines (Istanbul); Air India (Amritsar, Delhi) |
| Edinburgh | Lufthansa (Frankfurt, Munich); Austrian (Vienna*); Brussels Airlines (Brussels); Turkish Airlines (Istanbul); Aegean (Athens); United (Newark, Washington, Chicago*); Air Canada (Montreal*, Toronto*) |
Birmingham, Manchester and Edinburgh connect to Frankfurt, Munich and Istanbul. Other airports, such as Glasgow, Bristol and Newcastle, have fewer Star Alliance routes, so most flyers there connect through one of these hubs or fly via London.
Four typical flyers
In each example the numbers are the status earned per round trip in the calculator (every number links to the calculation), multiplied by the round trips in a year. They count Star Alliance Gold from scratch: Turkish Elite, KrisFlyer Elite Gold, United Premier Gold, Aeroplan 35K and Senator.
1. The Europe commuter: 20 business round trips to Frankfurt
A London consultant who flies Lufthansa business class from Heathrow to Frankfurt 20 times a year. That's 40 flights.
| Program and target | London–Frankfurt, businessper round trip | Status earned in a year | Round trips to Goldall on this route |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lufthansa Miles & MoreSenator: 2,000 Points | 80 | 1,60080% of Gold | 25 |
| Turkish Airlines Miles&SmilesElite: 40,000 Status Miles | 2,400 | 48,000Gold reached | 17 |
| Singapore Airlines KrisFlyerElite Gold: 50,000 Elite miles | 1,223 | 24,46049% of Gold | 41 |
| United MileagePlusPremier Gold: 12,000 PQP | 326 | 6,52054% of Gold | 37 |
| Air Canada Aeroplan35K: 35,000 SQC | 244 | 4,88014% of Gold | 144 |
Turkish gets this flyer to Gold, with 8,000 Status Miles to spare. Turkish credits at least 1,200 miles for each Lufthansa business flight, however short, so a 408-mile hop earns about three times its distance. Miles & More comes to 80% of Senator, and the only way up is more Lufthansa Group business flights. BA's Silver at ÂŁ450 per Club Europe round trip would take 10 round trips, so a commuter with a choice should price both.
2. The transatlantic regular: 8 economy round trips to Newark
A London-based manager who flies United from Heathrow to Newark eight times a year in standard economy (class M), 16 flights. United's own program is counted on an assumed base fare of $700 per round trip.
| Program and target | London–Newark, economyper round trip | Status earned in a year | Round trips to Goldall on this route |
|---|---|---|---|
| Turkish Airlines Miles&SmilesElite: 40,000 Status Miles | 6,931 | 55,448Gold reached | 6 |
| Singapore Airlines KrisFlyerElite Gold: 50,000 Elite miles | 6,931 | 55,448Gold reached | 8 |
| United MileagePlusPremier Gold: 12,000 PQP | 700 | 5,60047% of Gold | 18 |
| Air Canada Aeroplan35K: 35,000 SQC | 1,386 | 11,08832% of Gold | 26 |
Turkish and KrisFlyer both reach Gold with 55,448 of their 40,000 and 50,000 points, because both credit standard United economy fares at 100% of the distance. United itself is at 47% of Premier Gold on that spend, and Aeroplan at 32%. Miles & More isn't an option here: United flights earn Points, but not the Qualifying Points that Senator also needs.
3. The Asia long-haul flyer: 3 economy round trips to Singapore
A flyer with family in Southeast Asia who goes to Singapore three times a year on Singapore Airlines in standard economy: six long flights.
| Program and target | London–Singapore, economyper round trip | Status earned in a year | Round trips to Goldall on this route |
|---|---|---|---|
| Turkish Airlines Miles&SmilesElite: 40,000 Status Miles | 10,148 | 30,44476% of Gold | 4 |
| Singapore Airlines KrisFlyerElite Gold: 50,000 Elite miles | 10,148 | 30,44461% of Gold | 5 |
| United MileagePlusPremier Gold: 12,000 PQP | 1,000 | 3,00025% of Gold | 12 |
| Air Canada Aeroplan35K: 35,000 SQC | 2,028 | 6,08417% of Gold | 18 |
Three trips don't quite reach Gold in any program. Turkish comes closest at 76%, and a fourth round trip would take it over. KrisFlyer, Singapore Airlines' own program, earns the same 10,148 miles per trip as Turkish, since both credit this economy class at 75% of the distance, but it needs 50,000 for Gold against Turkish's 40,000, so it is at 61%. Check your class: the cheapest economy fares earn very little or nothing.
4. The regional flyer: Manchester to Frankfurt and Istanbul
Someone based in Manchester with 10 economy round trips a year to Frankfurt on Lufthansa and 2 to Istanbul on Turkish, 24 flights.
| Program and target | Manchester–Frankfurtper round trip | Manchester–Istanbulper round trip | Status earned in a year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Turkish Airlines Miles&SmilesElite: 40,000 Status Miles | 1,600 | 3,320 | 22,64057% of Gold |
| Singapore Airlines KrisFlyerElite Gold: 50,000 Elite miles | 778 | 3,320 | 14,42029% of Gold |
| United MileagePlusPremier Gold: 12,000 PQP | 207 | 553 | 3,17626% of Gold |
| Air Canada Aeroplan35K: 35,000 SQC | 102 | 662 | 2,3447% of Gold |
Short economy hops go a long way with Turkish, but not far enough alone. The minimum Turkish credits (800 miles on a Lufthansa economy flight, against 519 miles of actual distance from Manchester) gets the year to 57% of Elite. Adding one long-haul round trip like the Singapore one above (Manchester has its own non-stop Singapore Airlines flight) would take it to about 82%, and two would clear Gold. From Edinburgh or Birmingham the picture is the same, via Frankfurt, Munich or Istanbul.
Before you choose
- Turkish Elite lasts two years and needs 40,000 Status Miles in 12 months to reach, with lower targets to keep it. See our Miles&Smiles guide.
- Check your booking class. The cheapest economy classes earn little or nothing toward status with several programs. Our fare class guide shows where to find yours.
- United needs four paid flights on United or United Express for every Premier level, and counts spend in US dollars. See the MileagePlus guide.
- Miles & More needs Qualifying Points as well as Points, and those come only from Lufthansa Group and co-issuing partner flights. See the Miles & More guide.
- The perks follow the alliance, not the airline. Star Alliance Gold gives lounge access, priority boarding and extra baggage on any Star Alliance airline, but nothing extra on British Airways, which is in oneworld. See what each level gives in our guides.
How we worked it out
Each per-trip figure is the status the calculator gives for one round trip with each program's published chart, using great-circle distances, on October 5, 2026. The yearly total is that figure multiplied by the trips shown. United's program is counted on an assumed base fare of $700 per Newark round trip, and BA's on assumed base fares of ÂŁ450 (Club Europe), ÂŁ600 (Newark) and ÂŁ900 (Singapore). Real fares change both. Tier bonuses, promotions and credit card spending aren't included. Route availability follows Wikipedia's airport pages, which can be a few weeks behind.
