oneworld Sapphire and Emerald from Singapore
Figures checked October 5, 2026
Singapore is Star Alliance country. Singapore Airlines and its budget arm Scoot fly to 132 of the 168 destinations from Changi, and the oneworld airlines together fly to just 16. But much of the region's best flying is on oneworld airlines: Cathay Pacific to Hong Kong, Qantas to Australia, Japan Airlines to Tokyo and British Airways to London. And oneworld Sapphire and Emerald are the tiers that open lounges and carry extra bags. We ran four typical Singapore-based flyers through our status calculator to see which program gets them there.
It's the obvious choice for oneworld status if you have a link to the UK, such as family there or regular trips that start in London, where British Airways is the home airline. For flying that starts in Singapore it's usually the one to avoid. The British Airways Club pays Tier Points by what you pay, not how far you fly, so a Singapore鈥揕ondon business round trip on a mid-priced fare earns only about 4,200 against the 20,000 that Gold (oneworld Emerald) needs. Alaska Atmos Rewards and Finnair Plus credit the same British Airways flight by distance and cabin, and four round trips earn 135,308 points against their 80,000. On economy fares British Airways' program barely moves at all. Fly British Airways if it suits you, but credit the flight to another oneworld program.
What we found
- Programs that pay by distance and cabin beat the ones that pay by fare. Alaska Atmos Rewards and Finnair Plus credit British Airways business-class flights at 250% of the distance, so two Singapore鈥揕ondon round trips reach Sapphire and three reach Emerald.
- Japan Airlines business class is the best Emerald bet. Six Singapore鈥揟okyo round trips reach Finnair Plus Platinum, and every program reaches Sapphire.
- Economy is slow everywhere. Eight Singapore鈥揝ydney economy round trips on Qantas reach 91% of Qantas Gold at best. No program gets a regular economy flyer to Sapphire quickly.
- British Airways' own program is the slowest from Singapore unless you buy expensive fares. It follows what you pay, not the distance.
- Read the small print. Qantas wants four Qantas or Jetstar flights for every tier, and JAL wants half of its points from JAL Group flights.
What Sapphire and Emerald give you
They are the middle and top oneworld tiers. Benefits apply on any oneworld airline, so the program you credit decides how fast you get them, not which airline you can use them on:
| Sapphire | Emerald | |
|---|---|---|
| Lounges | Business Class lounges | First and Business Class lounges |
| Extra baggage | One extra bag: 15 kg on weight-system itineraries, or one bag up to 23 kg | A bigger extra allowance: 20 kg, or one extra bag |
| At the airport | Priority boarding, priority baggage handling (not on British Airways) | First Class priority check-in, fast track or priority lanes at select airports, plus everything in Sapphire |
Each airline's own program adds its own extras. The oneworld section of each program's guide has the exact levels: Sapphire is Cathay Gold, Qantas Gold, BA Silver, AAdvantage Platinum, JAL Sapphire, Finnair Gold and Atmos Gold. Emerald is Cathay Diamond, Qantas Platinum, BA Gold, AAdvantage Platinum Pro, JAL Diamond, Finnair Platinum and Atmos Platinum.
oneworld flights from Changi
Cities each oneworld airline flies to non-stop, from Wikipedia's airport page for Changi (the data our route check uses):
| Airline | From Singapore |
|---|---|
| Qantas | Brisbane, Paris, Darwin, London, Melbourne, Perth, Sydney |
| British Airways | London, Sydney |
| Japan Airlines | Tokyo Haneda, Tokyo Narita |
| Cathay Pacific | Hong Kong |
| Qatar Airways | Doha |
| Finnair | Helsinki |
| Malaysia Airlines | Kuala Lumpur |
| SriLankan Airlines | Colombo |
| Oman Air | Muscat |
| Fiji Airways | Nadi |
Jetstar, in the Qantas group, also flies from Singapore, and its flights earn Qantas Points. Cathay Pacific flies on from Hong Kong, and Qatar Airways from Doha, to the rest of its network, so many Singapore flyers use them for Europe and North America. Qatar's Qpoints come only from its own calculator, so we don't count them here.
Four typical Singapore-based flyers
Each number is the status one round trip earns in the calculator, multiplied by the round trips in a year. Every number links to the calculation. A round trip is two flights, and every program's target is counted from scratch.
1. The Hong Kong regular: 12 business round trips on Cathay Pacific
A regional manager who flies business class between Singapore and Hong Kong 12 times a year: 24 flights.
| Program and targets | Per round trip | In a year12 round trips | Sapphire levelreached? | Emerald levelreached? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cathay membershipGold: 600; Diamond: 1,200 Status Points 路 own airline | 80 | 960 | Yes8 round trips | 80%15 round trips |
| Qantas Frequent FlyerGold: 700; Platinum: 1,400 Status Credits 路 needs 4 Qantas flights | 160 | 1,920 | Yes5 round trips | Yes9 round trips |
| Finnair PlusGold: 45,000; Platinum: 80,000 tier points | 3,970 | 47,640 | Yes12 round trips | 60%21 round trips |
| Alaska Atmos RewardsGold: 40,000; Platinum: 80,000 status points | 3,970 | 47,640 | Yes11 round trips | 60%21 round trips |
| The British Airways ClubSilver: 7,500; Gold: 20,000 Tier Points | 794 | 9,528 | Yes10 round trips | 48%26 round trips |
| American Airlines AAdvantagePlatinum: 75,000; Platinum Pro: 125,000 Loyalty Points | 3,970 | 47,640 | 64%19 round trips | 38%32 round trips |
Cathay's own program is the quickest way to Sapphire without strings attached: at 80 Status Points a round trip it takes 8 round trips, so 12 is plenty. Emerald (Diamond) needs 15, so a year of 12 gets you to 80% of it. Qantas is faster on paper and reaches both tiers, but only if you also take four flights on Qantas or Jetstar. Alaska and Finnair, which pay by distance, reach Sapphire with 47,640 points but are far from Emerald, and British Airways' program reaches Silver (Sapphire) but not Gold.
2. The Australia traveler: 8 economy round trips on Qantas
Someone with family or business in Sydney who flies Singapore鈥揝ydney eight times a year in standard economy (class M, Qantas' Economy Saver in the Qantas program).
| Program and targets | Per round trip | In a year8 round trips | Sapphire levelreached? | Emerald levelreached? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Qantas Frequent FlyerGold: 700; Platinum: 1,400 Status Credits 路 own airline, needs 4 Qantas flights | 80 | 640 | 91%9 round trips | 46%18 round trips |
| Alaska Atmos RewardsGold: 40,000; Platinum: 80,000 status points | 3,907 | 31,256 | 78%11 round trips | 39%21 round trips |
| Finnair PlusGold: 45,000; Platinum: 80,000 tier points | 3,907 | 31,256 | 69%12 round trips | 39%21 round trips |
| American Airlines AAdvantagePlatinum: 75,000; Platinum Pro: 125,000 Loyalty Points | 3,907 | 31,256 | 42%20 round trips | 25%32 round trips |
| The British Airways ClubSilver: 7,500; Gold: 20,000 Tier Points | 156 | 1,248 | 17%49 round trips | 6%129 round trips |
Economy doesn't get you to Sapphire in a year. Qantas' own program comes closest at 91% of Gold, and a ninth round trip would reach it. Alaska Atmos Rewards and Finnair Plus, which credit this fare at 50% of the distance, are at 78% and 69%. British Airways' program barely moves on an economy fare, so it's the wrong place for these flights.
3. The London long-haul flyer: 4 business round trips on British Airways
A finance executive who flies British Airways business class between Singapore and London four times a year.
| Program and targets | Per round trip | In a year4 round trips | Sapphire levelreached? | Emerald levelreached? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Alaska Atmos RewardsGold: 40,000; Platinum: 80,000 status points | 33,827 | 135,308 | Yes2 round trips | Yes3 round trips |
| Finnair PlusGold: 45,000; Platinum: 80,000 tier points | 33,827 | 135,308 | Yes2 round trips | Yes3 round trips |
| The British Airways ClubSilver: 7,500; Gold: 20,000 Tier Points 路 own airline, assumed 拢3,200 fare | 4,200 | 16,800 | Yes2 round trips | 84%5 round trips |
| JAL Mileage BankSapphire: 50,000; Diamond: 100,000 FLY ON Points 路 needs half from JAL | 16,913 | 67,652 | Yes3 round trips | 68%6 round trips |
This is where crediting the flights elsewhere pays off. Alaska Atmos Rewards and Finnair Plus both credit British Airways' business fares at 250% of the distance, so each round trip is worth 33,827 points. Two reach Gold (oneworld Sapphire), and four give 135,308 points, well past the Platinum (Emerald) targets of 80,000. British Airways' own program, at an assumed 拢3,200 fare, reaches Silver in two round trips and is at 84% of Gold after four. JAL looks good on paper, but it needs half its points from JAL Group flights.
4. The Japan business traveler: 6 business round trips on Japan Airlines
Someone who flies Singapore鈥揟okyo Haneda six times a year on Japan Airlines in business class.
| Program and targets | Per round trip | In a year6 round trips | Sapphire levelreached? | Emerald levelreached? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| JAL Mileage BankSapphire: 50,000; Diamond: 100,000 FLY ON Points 路 own airline | 13,131 | 78,786 | Yes4 round trips | 79%8 round trips |
| American Airlines AAdvantagePlatinum: 75,000; Platinum Pro: 125,000 Loyalty Points | 16,442 | 98,652 | Yes5 round trips | 79%8 round trips |
| Finnair PlusGold: 45,000; Platinum: 80,000 tier points | 16,442 | 98,652 | Yes3 round trips | Yes5 round trips |
| Alaska Atmos RewardsGold: 40,000; Platinum: 80,000 status points | 8,221 | 49,326 | Yes5 round trips | 62%10 round trips |
| The British Airways ClubSilver: 7,500; Gold: 20,000 Tier Points | 3,288 | 19,728 | Yes3 round trips | 99%7 round trips |
| Qantas Frequent FlyerGold: 700; Platinum: 1,400 Status Credits 路 needs 4 Qantas flights | 200 | 1,200 | Yes4 round trips | 86%7 round trips |
Finnair Plus is the one program that reaches Emerald with six trips. Its Platinum needs 80,000 points and Japan Airlines business fares earn 98,652 in six round trips (it takes five). JAL's own Diamond needs 100,000 FLY ON Points and AAdvantage's Platinum Pro needs 125,000, so both stop at 79%. British Airways' Gold (Emerald) is a whisker away at 99%. Every program reaches Sapphire, though Qantas needs four Qantas or Jetstar flights too.
Before you choose
- Qantas needs four Qantas or Jetstar flights for every tier, so flights on other airlines alone won't do it.
- JAL needs half of its points from JAL Group flights: 25,000 of the 50,000 for Sapphire, and 50,000 of the 100,000 for Diamond.
- The year differs. AAdvantage counts March 1 to the end of February, Cathay and Alaska the calendar year, Finnair a 12-month tracking period and Qantas your membership year.
- One program per flight. Each flight can be credited to only one program, so you can't earn the same flight twice. Put the right number on the booking.
- Star Alliance on the same flights. If you fly Singapore Airlines more than anything else, KrisFlyer may serve you better than any of these. See our Star Alliance comparison.
How we worked it out
Each per-trip figure is the status one round trip earns in the calculator with each program's published chart, using great-circle distances, on October 5, 2026. The yearly total is that figure multiplied by the trips shown. British Airways' own program is counted on an assumed 拢3,200 business fare for Singapore鈥揕ondon, and the booking classes are J for business and M for economy, or Qantas' Economy Saver in its own program. Tier bonuses, promotions and credit card spending aren't included. Alaska's figures use the partner chart for flights ticketed by the partner. Route availability follows Wikipedia's airport pages, which can be a few weeks behind.
